ABOUT

The Sixth Tone Fellowship is a field research program on contemporary China initiated and sponsored by Sixth Tone, an English-language news website based in Shanghai, China.

We encourage research into and understanding of China by young scholars and visual artists from around the world, and we welcome inventive solutions to the challenges China is facing.

The Sixth Tone Fellowship will provide funding for young scholars to come to China for a six weeks’ research trip and conduct fieldwork in locations all over the country.

Every other year, Sixth Tone will pose a fresh research question to young scholars and visual artists from across the globe. Emphasis will be placed on topics at the cutting edge of Chinese society, including technological innovation, industry and the economy, youth culture, and societal change.

STEERING COMMITTEE

The Steering Committee, consisting of experts in different professions in China, will offer its guidance regarding the content, design and results of the program. In addition, the Steering Committee of each year will have the responsibility to oversee the selection process and make the final decision of participants.

ALUMNI

The participants of the fellowship are young scholars from around the world who are ardently interested in contemporary China, motivated to think about the challenges lying ahead in Chinese society and passionate about finding solutions. They possess a strong command of written English and the ability to communicate in Chinese.
